Brukst. Skateboarding and the city.

Diploma project 2019

This is my graphic design diploma project which I did in Vilnius academy of arts. It’s an experimental project through which I tried to find a visual representation and identity of skateboarding. I analyzed the sport in the city: it’s movements and interaction with sculptures and architectural structures, the scratches the board leaves and of course the sound.

The movement was captured by putting two led lights on the main point of the board - the wheels and shooting skateboarder as he performed tricks in the dark. The results were white lines resembling of a pulse which symbolises life that skateboarding creates in the city spaces.

Through the series of experiments I created an installation consisting of a booklet with 20 popular skateboarding spots in Vilnius and tools made of skateboarding wheels with graphics on their surfaces. By rolling wheels in different paint I invited to create pulse for empty, lifeless city patterns and see skateboarding more as a kind of street art rather than vandalism.
